OIP launched the second phase of the Micronesia Dental Support Project (MDSP) which aims to bring medical resources and volunteers to help the people in the outer islands of Micronesia. In Summer 2008, we brought a team of volunteer dentists and a support crew to the State of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia. Although high fuel cost had forced the cancellation of all flights of the Caroline Islands Air to the outer island of Houk, the Team focused its services on various villages on the main island of Weno and Toloas in the lagoon. The sites included the Chuuk State Public Health Clinic, College of Micronesia – Chuuk Campus, Toloas Municipal Center, Xavier High School campus, Iras for the Outer Islanders.
In a week, the MDSP Team served over 500 patients in remote clinics helped by 2 local Dental Assistants, 4 local Student Assistants, and local volunteers who served with logistical arrangements. The MDSP Team left Chuuk with a tremendous gratitude for the hospitality and trust encountered in the eyes of the hundreds of children and parents who came to take part of the free community dental services offered by the MDSP Team. It was a hug success. For more information, please visit the MDSP website.
