We are happy to introduce Rose Saltalamacchia the pioneer volunteer in the Outer Islands Fellow program. She will join theĀ teaching staff at Xavier High School in Chuuk, Micronesia in August where she will serve as a volunteer teacher. Rose is scheduled to graduate from Santa Clara University in June with a bachelors degree in Sociology with a double minor in Environmental Studies and Music. A native of New Jersey, Rose has been an active member of the Xavier Residential Learning Community at Santa Clara University which focuses on the theme of global solidarity.
In her application essay, Rose reflects on the dual roles of serving as a OI Fellow as well as a volunteer teacher at the premiere Jesuit college preparatory school in Micronesia.
“I would like to be able to serve as an Outer Island Fellow because I feel as though I have a lot of energy to devote to the program, and I feel very fortunate for having the opportunity to possibly be a part of the new Fellowship. Although I knew I wanted to do volunteer work after graduating, I was really looking for a more personal connection to a program that I could be involved in. The opportunity to teach at Xavier seems like the perfect match, because besides the fact that it is a Jesuit school, I am passionate about teaching since it is what I hope to do in the future, and I would love to be able to have the experience working with high school students. I also would like to be able to learn from the students I would be teaching, and absorb the culture of Chuuk, and open my eyes to the see from their perspective. I hope to contribute all that I can to the school, learn by observing, and be accommodating to the needs of the school and students, all with an open mind.”
