Dr. Barry and Stephanie Staley
posing at the Chuuk International Airport after delivery of dental
supplies to the Chuuk Public Dental Health Clinic in January,
2005.
History: Retired
periodontist Barry Staley, DDS and his wife Stephanie started
the MDS Project in 2004 to help the Micronesian islands.
While preparing to visit his daughter Desha and her Micronesian
husband Vid who were volunteers at Xavier
High School in Chuuk, the Staleys solicited the help of dental
supply companies and dentists who donated over $200,000 worth
of dental equipment. Using their garage for storage as the supplies
arrived by the boxes, the Staleys were soon able to fill an entire
ship container. Using their own funds, they arranged with an ocean
liner to transport the container of dental supplies to the State
of Chuuk to be donated to the Public Dental Clinic. Barry and
Stephanie then travelled to Chuuk in time to help unload the container
and Dr. Staley then proceeded to train the local clinic staff
in the proper handling of the equipment.
