history
While serving as volunteers at Xavier
High School in Micronesia, Vid and Desha had opportunities to
visit the outer islands. There, they saw firsthand the lack of resources
in the elementary school, heard teachers asking for help in teacher
training opportunities, and the tremendous desire on the part of
parents to give their children a decent education. The inaccessibility
of many of the outer islands prevents the teachers and students
to visit libraries and for the teachers to participate in professional
development programs.
During one of their visit to the outer island of Houk,
Vid was approached by the civic and traditional leaders who asked
for help to improve education and health conditions in the community.
The project is supported by Stephanie Staley, a librarian
at Cabrillo College, who visited Xavier High School in 2005, and
was moved by the limited and outdated books found at the school
library. When she returned to the States, Mrs. Staley began to look
for ways to help the library at Xavier. She heads up the book collection
program and has sent a volume of Encyclopedia to the school as a
start.
